Early life

José Ángel López (born January 12, 1977) is a Puerto Rican singer, songwriter and record producer known by his stage name Daddy Yankee. Starting out as part of the duo Hectic in the 1990s, he began a solo career on top of continuing with Hectic during the early 2000s.


 Growing up in a low-income family, Daddy Yank ee pursued a career as a mechanic. At age 14, he began to write songs while working, later turning to record producing and then recording demo tapes to be played on local radio stations. His first hit was Dembótelo in 1996. Daddy Yankee was born Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on July 3, 1977. His stage name is derived from his childhood nickname Yankee which he had given himself to distinguish himself from his father who is also named Ramón. He grew up listening to hip hop music and became involved in the genre as a teenager.


 He started his musical career at age 14, originally as a member of Los Destructores alongside his stepbrother Yayo El Bambino and friend Wise. In 1992, Ayala was discovered by Vico C who signed him to his record label; however, he was advised to change his stage name and chose Daddy Yank ee which he felt was representative of what he portrayed in his songs.


 In 1996, Daddy Yank ee released his debut studio album No Mercy under Vico C's label at an event held in one of Hato Rey's largest venues. The album included a collection of dancehall and reggaeton songs featuring various artists mostly produced by DJ Nelson. After releasing two compilation albums with Daddy Yankee in 1997, Vico C sold his recording studio and left his management role within the music industry.


Production and success of Barrio Fino (1998–2002)

In 1998, Daddy Yankee released his first studio album Barrio Fino. The album became a major success in the Latin market and was certified diamond by the RIAA. The album reached number one on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart for 13 consecutive weeks and was awarded Album of the Year at the Premio Lo Nuestro Awards.


 Barrio Fino performed well commercially, peaking in various Latin American countries. In 1998, it reached number 5 on Billboard Top Latin Albums and stayed on that chart for 48 non-consecutive weeks, topping it for 13 weeks. In 1999, Barrio Fino topped Top Latin Albums for a further 19 non-consecutive weeks and also topped Billboard's Latin Pop Albums chart at number 1 for 18 consecutive weeks.


 The album sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, gaining a diamond certification from RIAA. It is considered one of best-selling reggaeton albums of all time and also one of Latin music's best-selling albums.


Worldwide recognition (2003–2006)

In 2003, Daddy Yankee released his third album El Cartel: The Big Boss, which was a huge hit and made him a superstar in Latin America. He then went on to release Barrio Fino in 2004. The album was an even bigger success and reached number 1 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart for three consecutive weeks. A few months after the release of his album, he released Vuelve in 2005.


 He won an American Music Award in 2004 for Best Latin Artist. In 2005, Daddy Yankee released a compilation album of some of his biggest hits called Los Homerun-es.
